Working principle of peristaltic pump

Peristaltic pumps work the same way but with rollers instead of fingers. The fluid is pumped by alternately squeezing and releasing the pump's flexible delivery hose. Like squeezing a hose between two fingers, as the fingers move, negative pressure forms inside the tube and the liquid flows with it.



A peristaltic pump is a "pillow" shaped fluid formed in a pump tube between two rotating rollers. The volume of the "pillow" depends on the inner diameter of the pump tube and the geometry of the rotor. The flow rate depends on the product of three parameters: the speed of the pump head and the size of the "pillows" and the number of "pillows" produced by the rotor per revolution. The size of the "pillow" is generally constant (except when a particularly viscous fluid is pumped).



Compared with pumps with the same rotor diameter, a pump with a larger "pillow" volume has a larger volume of fluid transported by its rotor per revolution, but the pulsation degree is also larger. This is similar to the situation of membrane valves. A pump with a smaller "pillow" volume delivers a smaller volume of fluid each revolution of its rotor; Moreover, the rapid and continuous formation of a small "pillow" makes the fluid flow more stable. This is similar to the way gear pumps work.
